Book Awards






SCIBA Announces Winners for the 2017 Book Awards

The SCIBA Book Awards primarily reward local authors and illustrators for their works published in the previous year. (Except for the Glenn Goldman Award for Art, Architecture, and Photography, all submitted writers and illustrators must reside within the area of our Southern California region.) These awards celebrate the local talent we love and love to support. Submissions are made by anyone thorough our website. This year we had 137 submissions in seven categories. Booksellers vote once to achieve a field of three finalists per category. Then booksellers vote on the winners.

Winners are announced at our annual meeting and trade show each fall. Winning titles are also featured in our seasonal catalog, in stores and distribution starting in early November. This year’s finalists included:

The Glenn Goldman Award for Art, Architecture, and Photography

·       Kerry James Marshall, Charles Gaines

·       Spectacular Illumination: Neon Los Angeles, 1925-1965, Tom Zimmerman with J. Eric Lynxwiler

·       Give Me Life: Iconography and Identity in East La Murals, Holly Barnet-Sanchez, Tim Drescher, Tomas Yba

 

The Fiction Award

·       The Mothers, Brit Bennett

·       Wangs Vs. the World, Jade Chang

·       Little Nothing, Marisa Silver

 

The Young Adult Award

·       Girling Up: How to Be Strong, Smart and Spectacular, Mayim Bialik

·       Tales of the Peculiar, Ransom Riggs, Andrew Davidson (Illustrated by)

·       Pasadena, Sherri L. Smith

The Middle Grade Award

·       The Castle in the Mist, Amy Ephron

·       Addison Cooke and the Treasure of the Incas, Jonathan W. Stokes

·       Short, Holly Goldberg Sloan

The Picture Book Award

·       Give Bees a Chance, Bethany Barton, Bethany Barton (Illustrated by)

·       A Greyhound, a Groundhog, Emily Jenkins, Chris Appelhans (Illustrated by)

·       Blue Sky White Stars, Kadir Nelson (Illustrated by), Sarvinder Naberhaus

The Non-Fiction Award

·       The Rules Do Not Apply: A Memoir,  Ariel Levy

·       Rejected Princesses: Tales of History's Boldest Heroines, Hellions, and Heretics, Jason Porath

·       American Heiress: The Wild Saga of the Kidnapping, Crimes and Trial of Patty Hearst, Jeffrey Toobin

The T. Jefferson Parker Mystery Award

·       Shadow Man: A Novel, Alan Drew

·       Blue Light Yokohama: A Crime Novel, Nicolas Obregon

·       The Force: A Novel, Don Winslow
