Independent Bookstore Day - Saturday, April 29 Celebrate with us: 10 AM – 5 PM
Poetry Open Mic, Pets, Storytime & more
On Saturday, April 29, from 10 AM – 5 PM, Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse celebrates Independent Bookstore Day with activities for all ages, including events in conjunction with National Poetry Month. Among our offerings that day are: special storytime with guest author Laura Knight; visits from our favorite therapy dogs Cedar, Blondie and Luke; poetry readings for and by children, poetry-on-the-spot by Brian Sonia-Wallace, and poetry open mic with “Uncle” Ruthie Buell; an appearance by K.R. Levin, who shares his book The Kids from Folden and brings props he has created for TV’s LabRats and Wizards of Waverly Place. We are also pleased to present a display of Lego art by 2nd grade students from local Paradise Canyon Elementary School. Plus, we have lots of give-aways and drawings to win tote bags full of books!
HERE IS OUR SCHEDULE:
10-11:30: Encourage your child to be kind to the planet - Special Storytime and related activity with Laura Knight, author of SPOT: A Sea Pup’s Survival Guide. During this time, you can also visit with reading therapy dog CEDAR, a beautiful collie. For children who are shy about reading, CEDAR provides a patient, nonjudgmental audience. Read him a poem or book from our children’s section.
11:30-1:30: Meet Blondie and Luke, a golden retriever couple and therapy dogs at Children’s Hospital, Los Angeles. They always come in costume – make sure to take a photo with them.
12-2: K.R. Levin, Property Master on TV’s LabRats and Wizards of Waverly Place, brings a selection of his creations. He also reads from his recent book The Kids from Folden (ages 8-13).
12-4: RENT POET offers poetry on-the-spot for your pet. Bring a photo (or not), and Brian Sonia-Wallace will write a poem for you in real time on his manual typewriter. He’s also bringing his own dog, a Shiba Inu, and signing his book I Sold These Poems Now I Want Them Back.
1:30-3: 2nd grade students from local PARADISE CANYON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL read their original poetry. This is part of a project led by art teacher Tammy Scanlan and classroom teacher Pamela Watts. The students also created LEGO art for their poems, which is on display throughout April in the bookstore’s coffeehouse.
3-5: “Uncle” Ruthie Buell reads selections of her work and hosts a poetry open mic for all ages. She has had a radio show on KPFK for 57 years. Come to read, come to listen. Come early to sign up!
From 10:30-4, representatives are here to represent Special Kids-Special Needs, a program sponsored by SoCal Charity Foundation (a non-profit organization whose goal is to hold bi- monthly events for children with disabiities and/or illness throughout the Los Angeles county region). Please stop by their table to get information on this worthwhile charity.
You can also have a seat and write a poem which, with your permission, may end up on our facebook page or in our e-newsletter; and/or join others of all ages at a coloring table.
Finally, throughout the day, the bookstore is offering give-aways, and we are having a drawing for several tote bags full of books.
